Best practices with ICF foundation modelling

    Hi Everyone,

I have found that when we model ICF basement walls using "user defined" R-values, that in the hot2000 report modelling output, the RSI values for the interior/exterior (added together) are very much exaggerated. When I remove the exterior insulation to the interior, it reflects a more realistic outcome.

Am I missing something? Thanks in advance!

This was addressed in program bulletin # 81. When 'user specified' is used for the external insulation H2k calculated it in twice. The workaround is to put the total depth of the insulation all to the inside.

This was supposedly fixed a good while ago, but obviously not! I think that the original problem came about when the external insulation wasn't calculated in at all and the fix was the same, put all the insulation to the inside. This was "fixed" with a following software update.........or not

I have used a User Defined code for ICF walls before too, and that seems to work pretty well. I've never double checked the full report though...maybe I'll check now...looks normal too me, the effective R-value is within a range that makes sense.

This is good especially if one of your clients always uses the same ICF block on multiple builds (new construction).

Ray, you're right in Bulletin #81 which was from v11.9.  I just put in a request to find out if it was all corrected in 11.10.

Chelsea & all - its best to include which version of Hot2000 you are working with.

Bulletin #81 at the bottom states the intention of NRCan is that it will be fixed in 11.11 (still to be released).

Hi Everyone, you confirmed my suspicions that I should be putting the full thickness of the insulation to the interior. And yes, I'm using 11.10 so hopefully it will be fixed next round!
