The window energy rating has been debated for the 30+ years it has been in use in Canada. The NBC 2025 kept the ER in the code as a means of complying with the prescriptive path in the code. The 2025 code will also set an upper limit on the solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) for fenestration. The SHGC upper limit will address the concerns about the use of ER in the code. This presentation will explain the proposed changes to the 2025 code and look at some data from the ENERGY STAR window program to explain how these new requirements will impact windows and doors.
