Energy advisors have done a remarkable job in reducing the operational energy required for buildings. But it is possible for a zero energy or zero emission building to have a massive carbon footprint due to the emissions released when manufacturing building materials? In fact, the material carbon footprint can be the equivalent of hundreds of years of operational emissions. In order to mitigate the worst of climate change, both the operation and materials for our buildings need to be net zero, or better.

Chris Magwood will lead the presentation based on recent research by Builders for Climate Action and including a new report for Natural Resources Canada. It shows the wide range of carbon footprint results achievable in new low rise construction, from highs that make climate change mitigation impossible to lows that can actually help reverse climate change. We'll look at the materials, strategies, tools and costs for making real zero carbon buildings.
